Golf is undeniably one of the most popular sports that are played around the world. The rule of the game is very simple. Using clubs, players should shoot the golf balls into the designated holes in the fewest strokes possible. The following are some fun facts that you might not know about golf.

The birth of a game

Golf was invented in the fifteen century in Scotland. The first professional game that was ever played is the Edinburgh Silver Cup. It has been played about two centuries after the invention of golf. When the professional game was played there were only thirteen rules. Today, there are thirty-four rules. The
authority in golf ball is the United States Golf Association and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.

Evolution of the golf ball

The original golf ball is far from the one that is being used today. The original one is stuffed with bird feathers! This particular ball known as the “featherie” was used until 1848. Today, golf balls have two or more layers of different materials – plastic, rubber, and thread. A professional golf ball should have a diameter of 4.25 inches and should weigh no more than 1.620 oz. It should also have three hundred thirty six dimples.

Hole in one

The term “hole in one” refers to an event where a player successfully shoots the golf ball into the hole in just a single stroke. The youngest golfer who has ever shot a hole in one is Jake Paine of Lake Forest, California. The interesting fact is that he is just three years old when he shot a hole in one over a 65-yard golf game. It is very difficult to shoot a hole in one and a lot of professional golfers still dream of being able to do so. However, they should not lose hope yet since the oldest man who shot a hole in one is 101 years old! His name is Harold Stilson of Boca Raton, Florida.

Golf: Is it a man’s sport?

The common misconception is that golf is only enjoyed by men. There was also this myth that GOLF is an acronym that stands for the phrase, “Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden“. However, you will be surprised to find out that about thirty percent of golf players are women. A lot of women golfers also compete in international tournaments. A lot of clubs are specially designed for ladies as well.

Heat increases travel distance

Most golf tournaments are conducted during the summer. While trying to avoid mud seems to be the most obvious reason, there is also another reason why games are held in summer. Golf balls travel further on very hot days. Of course, if golfers are able to hit balls farther, the game could be more interesting. An increase in air temperature by 25 degrees can cause balls flying at a speed of 100mph to reach eight yards further.

These are some interesting facts about golf that I think you might not know. Fun, isn’t it to know about golf’s less known facts?
